Planning your move will make the process much easier and more organized. The best way to get started is to create a moving checklist and moving timeline to have a stress-free moving experience. Typically, the best moving timeline starts 8 weeks before the date of your move. Take a look at the expert moving timeline we’ve put together and determine which tips could apply to you.

At this point, you probably feel pretty confident that you have plenty of time to get everything completed. However, if you want to maximize your moving timeline you want to get started sooner rather than later. In order to have a stress-free move, starting in week 8 is one of our first tips for moving out.

  • Make a list of all of your furniture and other items that need to be moved.
  • Determine the dates of the move.
  • Begin your research process for moving companies.
  • Set up a time to meet at your house for any estimates that may be necessary.
  • Take time to visit your new residence.
  • Discuss your budget with your spouse and determine your range.
  • Research your new school district.
  • Give your landlord proper notice.

  • Get all of the necessary services set up at your new home, such as lawn care, home cleaning, or other restoration services
  • Book child care, or other activity during the moving day

  • By now you should be finishing off many of the perishable items in your refrigerator. Make sure that it is only stocked for another two weeks.

DAY BEFORE
MOVING CHECKLIST

It’s officially one day before the move! You’re probably filled with lots of excitement and also a bit worried you may have forgotten something.

If you’ve been following our expert moving timeline, you’re most likely in great shape!

  • Finish packing any bags for your first night of essentials in your new home.
  • Make sure to take some cash out of the bank to have available while you’re moving.
  • Confirm your timings with the moving company for the truck or moving service.
  • Confirm your arrangements for child care or activities.
  • Schedule or prep your meals for the day of moving.
  • Research what the current weather is going to be like on the day of your move. That may impact your plans.
  • Reach out to any current neighbors that are unaware you are moving and let them know you will be leaving the neighborhood.

MOVING DAY CHECKLIST

Finally, you’ve reached the day of the move. By now you should be able to wake up and feel ready to go! You’ve done everything right, this should be a breeze.

  • Be sure to keep your bags for your first night’s stay and any personal items completely separate from moving boxes.
  • Keep some water available and accessible while you are moving so you can stay hydrated.
  • Make sure you have an accurate inventory list of all of your most important items.
  • Prepare directions for any fragile items for the movers. Also, make sure they have proper directions to the new residence.
  • Sign off on any documents like an inventory list or bill of landing.
  • Conduct a final pass of your old home to make sure that nothing was left behind.
  • Arrange a meeting with your old landlord to do a final inspection of the residence and hand over the keys.
